Medtronic CoreValve® U.S. Pivotal Trial.

The interventional cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgery divisions of UHealth – University of Miami Health System have been invited to participate in the Medtronic CoreValve® U.S. Pivotal Trial. Dr. Eduardo de Marchena, interventional cardiologist and associate dean for international medicine and Dr. Tomas Salerno, professor of surgery and vice chairman of faculty development for the DeWitt Department of Surgery, have been designated as principal investigators.

Dr. de Marchena spearheaded the first certified CoreValve® replacement program in South America in 2008 where he worked with noted interventional cardiologist Antonio Dager, M.D., a graduate of the Miller School’s William J. Harrington Medical Training Programs for Latin America.

The Medtronic CoreValve® U.S. Trial will give a great alternative to high-risk and extreme high-risk patients who are not candidates for open heart surgery and for whom conventional aortic valve replacements are not prudent.

This trial is yet another example of the world-class developments fostered by UHealth physicians like Drs. de Marchena and Salerno who are pivotal players in speeding discovery science and seeking new ways of treating cardiovascular diseases.
